'Dogs on Dean - Defenders' 2010 Summer Gathering

For many years, Alice and Bill Howenstine have hosted a wonderful summer Corn Roast event that brought our members together for fun, music and food. We thank them for this tradition and all those years of roasting!
In 2010, we began a new tradition of coming together for fun and food at our beautiful property on Dean Street in Woodstock, where we roasted hot dogs and s'mores over an open campfire!

When: Sunday, August 22nd, 5:00 p.m., rain or shine.

Where: Defender’s property on Dean Street in Woodstock. (South of Route 14 on East side of Dean St. Park in Soil & Water Conservation District parking lot, 1st drive on east side. The address is 2222 Dean St, Woodstock)

Bring: Lawn chairs, portable tables if you have them, re-useable table service, your favorite beverage and a dish to pass (salad, side dish, or dessert.) If you want to make s’mores, bring your favorite stuff for that, too!

Provided: Hot dogs, veggie dogs, buns & condiments. We will have a bonfire and provide hot dog roasting sticks.

What to wear: “Camping” clothes and comfortable shoes. It’s a short walk up the hill to the fire area, but we will have a picnic area set up near the parking lot for those who are unable to walk to the fire circle. Bring mosquito repellent & sun block. Bathroom facilities are available in the SWCD building.

We’ll have some Defenders t-shirts ($10) and Entertainment Books ($25) for sale – save a trip to the office! And we’ll be selling raffle tickets for the Leopold Bench, made and contributed by a member. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5, drawing will be at our golf outing on October 1st (winner need not be present)

the Last Defenders' Corn Roast - 2009

After 25 years, and over 100 corn roasts for various groups, Alice & Bill are hanging up their aprons. 2009 was the final Defenders' corn roast at Pioneer Tree Farm.

Many thanks to Alice and Bill, to Vern at Stade Farms for donating the corn, to all our outstanding cooks, and to everyone who helped with set-up and clean-up.

Defenders' Corn Roast 2008

On an absolutely perfect Sunday in August of 2008, the Defenders once again gathered for another world renowned Corn Roast and Potluck Supper at  Bill and Alice Howenstine’s Pioneer Tree Farm. Not too hot, not too rainy, not too buggy - a perfect day to be entertained by hammered dulcimer, guitar, and mandolin music.

A perfect day to see how a drill worked, back in the "olden days" (cordless, even - go figure!).

A perfect day for Board of Directors' President Bill Donato to speak about the direction the Defenders will be taking, and about our name change to “Environmental Defenders of McHenry County”.

A perfect day for playing games, including stuffing badminton birds with grass and then seeing how they tasted. (Honest guys - the corn is much better!). The Potluck dinner and roasted corn was fabulous as always, and a hay ride through the tree fields and forests was a perfect ending to the afternoon.

Many thanks to Alice and Bill, to Vern at Stade Farms for donating the corn, to all our outstanding cooks, and to everyone who helped with set-up and clean-up.
